Stan Litow is a Professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. He previously taught at Duke University where he also served as Innovator in Residence.

Earlier in his career he served as the Deputy Schools Chancellor for the New York City Public School system, the largest K-12 system in the US. After retiring from IBM where he served as President of the IBM Foundation and Vice President in charge of global Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Affairs for the IBM Company, Stan authored two books. One published by Wiley & Co titled " The Challenge for Business and Society: From Risk to Reward" and another published by Columbia Teachers College Press titled " Breaking Barriers: How P-TECH schools Create a Pathway From High School to College to Career."  

Stan also wrote a monthly column for Barron's and has been a top level speaker at a range of events focused on education, economic development and social issues. He recently served as Chair of the National Education Summit on Pathways from School to College to Career.

He serves as a Trustee of the State University of New York, the largest public postsecondary institution in the US where he Chairs the Academic Affairs Committee. He also serves on the board of the Albert Shanker Institute, the Center for Community Alternatives and the global news outlet called The Conversation. 

Stanley is the author of the book, The Challenge for Business and Society: From Risk to Reward,” published by John Wiley & Sons 2018 and co-authored Breaking Barriers: How P-TECH Schools Create a Pathway From High School to College to Career with Tina Kelley. Stanley serves as a Trustee of the State University of New York ( SUNY) where he is Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. He also serves as a Trustee of the Gerstner Foundation and the Albert Shanker Institute and was Chair of the recent National Education Summit on Pathways from School to College, to Career.

Stan is President Emeritus of the IBM Foundation and Vice President Emeritus of IBM's Global Corporate Citizenship program. At IBM he led the nation’s most effective global corporate social responsibility program. He managed and led three National Education Summits, created the P TECH program, a new model for high school and college that has been replicated across the US and globally. He also helped create the Corporate Service Corps often referred to as the corporate version of the Peace Corps and many innovative uses of technology to drive social responsibility efforts. He is former Deputy Chancellor of Schools for the City of New York where he created many innovative school reform efforts, former President of Interface, the not for profit think tank, former Executive Director of the Educational Priorities Panel and former Executive Director of the New York City Urban Corps, operated out of the Mayor's Office of the City of New York.

Stan also served as a member of several high level Presidential Commissions including the President's Welfare to Work Commission and the President's Urban Affairs Council as well as several Gubernatorial Commissions.

Stan has been honored to have received many prestigious awards recognizing his leadership and contribution to society from a range of important organizations including: The Council on Foundations, The Center for An Urban Future, United Neighborhood Houses, the Martin Luther King Commission, the Protestant Welfare Society, the NY State Business Council where he was recognized with the Corning Award previously given to several Governors of the State of NY, the Anne Frank Commission, Safe Horizons, the League of Women Voters, and the Coro Fellows program.

His career as a leader and innovator in education, corporate social responsibility, economic development and social services has been significant.

He has served in leadership positions across the public, private and not for profit sectors and has created many innovative programs of long standing.

In addition to his authorship of his latest book, he has authored book chapters for Brookings publications, the Yale Law Review, MIT and Oxford Press.

He has also authored numerous opinion pieces for the New York Times, New York Daily News, Forbes and other publications. Stan is a frequent speaker on critical public policy issues .

The Business Council of New York State's Corning Award, the Council on Foundations Scrivner Award, the Center for an Urban Future's Visionary Award, the Anne Frank Spirit Humanitarian Award, and The Martin Luther King Society Award. In addition humanitarian awards were granted by The Federation of Protestant Welfare, United Neighborhood Houses, Safe Horizons, the Coro Fellows, and the State University of New York.
